Some people give their snakes a nighttime temperature drop, but I never have and don't believe it is necessary.

Depending on the stat if you have set it to 85f you may not actually be getting 85f
I find that MICROCLIMATE mat stats are a little bit off. I have one in my MBKs viv and if I want her temps around 88f I need to set the mat stat a little under 92f on the stat. I know it sounds stupid but it happens. My recommendation is get a digital thermometer in beside the probe of the stat wait until the thermometer gets to your desired temps then turn the stat down til it turns off. No matter what the stat reads. Then it will never get any higher than what the digital thermometer reads. Make sure you use a decent thermometer and that it is where you have the probe. I normally burrow the probe in the substrate touching the heat mat, which I always have covered so the snake cannot come in contact with it.
