Default My Tortoise has a Respiritary Infection

Hiya,
does anyone know round about, how much it costs to check what or if my tortoise has an infection. Ive been told its a RI.
Can Swabs check for infections?
And what other antibiotics can you use other than Baytril, because shes allergic to baytril.
Thanks

Well it all depends on what vet you go to. I mean you'll pay the initial consultation fee which will probably be 20-30 pounds. (sorry pound sign doesn't work). Then some will tell by looking (which isn't the best way of telling but its what my vet did) and others may do some tests. Then it all depends on treatment. Like I said it all depends on treatment they give you and if they carry out any tests, but you'll probably be looking 60 minimum if the tortoise is given any medication. If it is an RI I cant tell you how important it is to get it to the vet as soon as possible and get some treatment. I have lost a tortoise to an RI.. when they take hold they take hold. A tortoise in the wild will try and hide any illness so if you notice anything like a runny nose, not eating, generally looking not its normal self, it is best to get it checked out.

Ah ok, you've changed your post lol. Right well they can take samples from the poo, not so sure about swabs. There are other medications that can be used, but Im not 100% sure exactly what they are. You are probably best calling your nearest reptile vet, they will be able to answer your questions much better and get your tortoise treated quickly...time is everything if it is an RI

Thanks, my vet had sent me away and said bring her back in a week and then hed refferred me to another vet because hes a reptile specialist. He just give me 3 xrays treated her badly he never even washed his hands before touching other sick animals in there! and sent me away with nothing after charging me £109!
I want her sorted out now though so im just really finding out what the right thing to do is so i can tell my vet what i want doing! Ha!
But my tortoise is only 5 months old i got her like this!
But my vet doesnt want to do anything with her until shes older and bigger because shes only 34grams.
I'm really worried because no1's taking it seriously!

Did the x-rays show anything? What are her symptoms?

You need to ring around the local vets and get her seen URGENTLY by a specialist reptile vet. Tell them that she is allergic to baytril and there are alternatives that they can use (cant remember the names atm) She needs to be on anti-b's asap.
