Default My Parrot Ruby

Hi,

Thought i'd share some pictures of my baby lory, she is about 13 weeks old now so starting to look lovely. She was very kindly gifted to me by her breeder, not a bad thing to be given!! Possibly one of the most beautiful parrots... in my opinion

Anyway, she is the tamest little bird you could find, so cuddly and sweet natured. And she is already talking, says "hello ruby ruby ruuuuuby"

They are nectar eaters, so have to have a specialist diet, they cant eat seeds, so this is Ruby's food, it smells lovely!

And here's the best picture i could get of her amazing brush tongue:

Wow you were given such a beautiful bird, lucky you. I sure do like Lories. How you coping with their messy poos?

I notice you have a snuggle hut. I have read some cautious views about using those things as parrots have been known to get caught up and dangle on the threads etc. I use one myself and had to recently replace mine as my lot had ripped a hole in it.

I actually find lories a lot easier to clean up after than seed eaters! If you keep ontop of it, make sure the walls are covered (i use ikea 79p shower curtains!lol) and wash everything down daily it is not a problem at all. Not as bad as trying to hoover seed out of carpets lol I am lucky that Ruby tends to aim down to the bottom of the cage rather than out at the walls though, makes life a lot easier!!

I really like the snuggle huts. I have also heard of accidents with them, but the same can be said of most toys, i think its important to just check these things daily and remove them if they look like they're getting worn. Ruby sleeps in hers every night though so i wouldnt want to just take it away as she loves it!

Lovely looking lory, too messy for my liking tho!

Speaking of snuggle huts, if you are looking for an alternative to them. My conure has one of these -

You can buy them off 24parrot and if your parrot dosn't actually want to sleep in it, they can safely rip it to bits!

Shenzi sleeps in her's all the time, and only chews one end of it

I have read suggestions about using those tubes you can buy for small furry pets as an alternative to the snuggle huts. I was going to replace their old snuggle hut for one of those but did not have the heart as my 3 conures love snugling up in theirs. Instead I have put up a tube next to their snuggle hut hoping they will slowely get used to using one.
