Default Ferret???

I will be using ferrets to help flush rabbits for my redtail Buzzard later this year and need a bit of advice. What is the best material to make hutches out of and can I paint the inside with anything. I'm wanting to build a cage that lasts so ideas and experiences will help. I have some 8mm ply lying about and am thinking of utilising that.

mine is made from 12mm ply i think? i know it is bigger then 8mm my boyfriend made it 2 storeys high with sleeping compartment he has put the fronts on hinges so it has 2 doors and is treated with coprinol(sp) that i up dat once a year i also got some shed roofing stuff the green stuff and covered the roof in that we made a little ramp for them to go up and down and used a metal netting like chicken wire as a front and to be honest its pretty darn good

i must say this may not make sense at all as i started it about half hour ago and dont have time to read it sorry really busy at work

Man, i got news for you!!!

When it comes down to it, I let them think what they want. If they care enough to bother with what I do, then I'm already better than them.

The thicker the wood you use for your hutches the better, I keep my ferrets in a shed which is much better for them and they can run around and have more room to play...I use white emultion on the walls and yacht varnish on the floor to stop it rotting from their wee, just remember it must be waterproof and draught free for them to be happy in there.. an unhappy ferret wont work, the more space and comfort a ferret has the better it is to handle.

The bird learns that the ferrets, dog and myself help to find food for him and so stays with us. Otherwise he would fly off and kill for himself.

There is always the chance the raptor (Buzzard in your case) would consider the ferret fair game. Rearing often helps break that but the bird will want to kill the thing running away.

LOL, a ferret viv. Thats my favourite quote ever.

Only thing is you have to be careful about which disenfectant you use when cleaning them out coz the stuff that turns white in water can poison ferrets! It's got phenol (think that's the right spelling) in it that can get absorbed into the wood and leech out.We had this happen and it took us a while to work out what killed our ferrets!

'The stuff that turns white in water' is also dangerous for reptiles, just wanted to add that.

My ferrets are in a furet tower with the door open in a 6x3x6 shed and they have a 6x6x6 run attached with a cat dorr between the two which gets open and closed daily by moi
