Default Degu Cage Question

Can they live in those big hamster palaces with all the tubes and stuff?

NO!!!!!!!!!!!

I had three in a zoozone and they chewed huge holes in no time. I had to reinforce the whole base with wire mesh but then decided to put them in one of my 3ft square tiled pens which has a tiled floor too.

It really is metal and or glass only for degus. No plastic or wood.

ps- they also need a metal wheel or as i prefer, those saucer type ones. They chewed three holes in a plastic ratty one i gave them.

will post a pic...

Thankyou. Exactly as I thought.

My managers kids want a hamster but they want one each, which they can't have because they're only allowed one cage. So as Degus can live together she thought that might be better. But the kids really want the tubes and stuff.

She won't go for mice.

How about winter white hamsters or something other than syrians as dwarf hammies are sociable. Syrians are the only strictly solitary species.

Rats are the best pets for kids in my opinion but they would not fit in any tubey kind of setup I know of.

Yeah I suggested rats before I knew about the tube obsession! She's having none of it lol.

Definitely doesn't want dwarves, I thought winter whites fought too?? That would be a good solution! I'll let her know thanks.

Although I think I've accidentally got her getting herself a couple of sugar gliders! Shame...

Thanks again
