Default hedgehogs

i dont know if im just noticing more or what, but just lately i am seeing an awful lot of hedgehogs out through the day, 3 in the last week but we have seen loads i would say at least one a day for the last 3 weeks.
today there was one laid on the edge of a grass verge i went over to see it but it was sleeping although i thought it had died as its spikes didnt move when i touched it, when i came back that way 10 mins later it was slowly crossing the road so i picked it up as its a busy area and took it across the road and put it in someones front garden.
is it normal for so many to be seen out at daylight hours?

Nope its not normal. If its a big hedgehog and appears to be hunting then its probably got a family and needs extra food but if its not acting normally or its small then you need to contact a hedgehog carer (hedgehog Preservation Trust ) or wildlife centre. Its certainly not normal to be laid at the side of the road. You always need to check for Fly eggs/maggots at this time of the year

Yes, Shell's right - if you see a hedgie out during the daytime, it's usually in trouble. A lactating female (not that you'd see she was lactating if it curled into a ball) could be out hunting cos she needs extra food, but anything small or slow moving could be ill. And fly strike could be one of the problems.
