Default Ticks, ticks and yet more ticks!!!

Has anyone removed these themselves? Tick Removal - How to Remove a Tick from a Dog - Dog Health Report - Dog Care - Dog Health Problems Solved!

My dog keeps getting them, keep going to vet, vet removes them and I am also using the monthly tick preventative stuff on him but they keep coming back!

According to these instructions it seems pretty easy to do - or if I take him to the vet (yet another £25!) to get it removed again - does anyone know of any shampoo that can be used all over him to stop them again in future.

If I was going to actually remove a tick I would buy a special tick remover - I wouldn't risk tweezers cos there's too much of a possibility of leaving the head in the dog! Proper tick removers slot in under the head and then a quick twist and it's out.

Failing that drown the tick in oil or smother it in vaseline. That's what we use at the wildlife sanctuary where I work because critters like hedgehogs can't be sprayed. We just pour a drop of orginary vegetable oil over the tick and it suffocates it.

Are there a lot of sheep in your immediate area, or where you regularly walk your dog, cos he must be picking them up from somewhere? Maybe you should think about changing where you walk your dog?

Thank you! I've been looking at various websites and it seems curved forcep type tweezers are recommended. Does the oil solution actually work just as well? I read on some of the websites not to use vaseline or like stuff as it's supposed to make the tick regurgitate and push more venom (or whatever) into the dog. :S

ive removed them myself, although i havent the problem it sounds like you have. maybe you should try the frontline tablets. the ticks and fleas just cant stomache them and add garlic into your dogs diet.

I think it's frontline that we've been using - just the liquid, not tablets. Will probably give the vet one more go tomorrow and see what he says - but it's suddenly started to become a once a month trip! Will give him some garlic

Tick removal - unscrew three times anticlockwise (with the tool of your choice, be that a tick hook, tweezers or your fingers!)

Frontline KILLS ticks but doesn't repel them. Talk to your vet about Advantix or Scalibor - kills and repels so hopefully no attachments.

I bought my tick removers from my vet when I brought home a hedgehog that had a massive infestation!! They were about £2 and there are 2 in the pack one for tiny ticks and one for slightly larger ones. Ask your vet if he stocks them. If he doesn't I'm happy to see if my vet's got any in and post them out to you!

Well, like I said we use oil on hedgehogs and they weigh in at 500g plus, so a lot smaller than a dog if the venom increases if you drown them!

Thank you very much - that would be great. I'll see if my vet has them and maybe I can do a removal under supervision. I've done snake injections and snake oral medication so I think after that tick removal should be childs play!

To VetDebbie: just checked the lotion we have to put on dog - it is the Advantix so doesn't seem to be working. I will ask for the other one that may work better for him.

My cats occasionally get them and I simply grasp the beastly things in my forceps and twist anti clockwise to unscrew the mouth parts which come out easily. Then I drop the horrid thing into a pot of boiling water to kill it. Vile horrid things. Cat then has to have some grated cheddar or a raw egg, to help it over the trauma lol
