Default My red squirrels - almost 3 months since their release

We've got 2 comfortable sun loungers which hang on the wall in the utility room and I've just taken one down for the first time this year and guess what happened when I opened it up?

About 6 hazelnuts fell out from the folds!

Awww..... my little squirrels - I don't half miss them!!

For months after they went to their winter quarters I found hazelnuts stashed all over my kitchen and utility room, I even found a chewed open box of tea bags with a hazelnut stashed inside! But I must admit I thought I'd found them all and here we are 6 months later and I'm still finding them!!

The good news is, however, that both squirrels are still alive and still doing well. They come back to the garden where the pen is most mornings for breakfast bringing with them the little wild one who had been visiting them. The owners of the house think it may be a female and their behaviour possibly confirms this because apparently they all arrive together, the wild one eats first and my two watch - Ah bless!! Then one of mine eats (we suspect Fidget because he was more dominant than Jake) and then Jake eats and then they all head off together.

Isn't that absolutely wonderful??

That's cute, they sound like great fun. I've only ever seen a red squirrel in the wild once, they're all grey around where i live :o( x

Nothing better than a happy ending. You must be delighted with the outcome.Id imagine it was very hard to step back and let them have their freedom though. Not surprised you miss them. You should be very proud of yourself

And a tear to me eye - so it did! I just had an urge to go and cuddle something! Daft isn't it?

When I first brought them home I thought I would have them for a couple of weeks and then they would go to the Sanctuary, but my bosses didn't want them there because of the greys and all the trouble they'd had, so I kept them. But even then I thought I'd only have them for a couple of months. I never dreamed they would be here for 5!!

So yes, Shell after all that time it was very hard to step back and let them have their freedom, but I'm still glad I did it, because it was what was right for them!
