Default domestic cats

why are domestic cats allowed to roam and other domesticated pets aren't?cats kill alot of british wildlife and spread diseases like feline aids and cat flu and mange as alot of irresponsible owners don't get their cats vaccinated and have regular vet visits as most cats are free to good loving home as again irresponsible owners don't get their cats spayed even tho they don't want or cant afford to keep the kittens, today alone i saw 30 cats in my garden and not one had a collar on or any identifying tags and most looked in poor condition to me

but it aint always the case of cats being kicked out some cats choose to roam and vanish for days, weeks or months on end.........they can loose collars dosnt mean to say they aint micro chipped

granted thats not always the case but you can say the owners of the cats are irresponsible if you dont know the cats story

but i totally agree not enough people do vaccinate cats properly or have them spayed.........why is something only they can answer but the way i see it if you dont want to pay out money dont get the pet in the 1st place

i have 6. all houise cats, all spayed, all vaccinated, none kill birds or wildlife. i do work for the cpl though, and see the suffering some cats have to put up with. dont tar all cat owners with the same brush.

I have a young tom that does roam, he is neutered and vaccinated, has a collar with a bell to give wildlife some warning and will be microchipped soon. He is always home at night though and even during the day tends to stay pretty close to home.

Totally agree.

My garden is cat proofed and none of my cats have been allowed to roam for the last 20 years. Cats will never be totally domesticated and lose their drive to hunt and kill, so I understand what you are saying.

However, butterfly and Emma are right you can't tar every owner with the same brush. Everyone's circumstances are different and each cat is different. Yes, there are a lot of people out there who don't deserve to have any pets because they don't look after them properly, but there are a lot of us who do.

Are you sure that you dont have a colony of ferals living in the neighbourhood? This would account for the amount of cats you are seeing and the condition of them. Only a small number of cats spread these diseases just as a small number of dogs spread parvo and distemper. Most cat owners are responsible enough to at least neuter their pets

i agree with you shell sounds more like a group of ferrals that have chosen his garden due to the amount of wildlife in there

the problem with ferral cats is they look so like pet cats that it can be hard to tell the difference unless you get too close to them without protection

obviously everyone on here cares for their animals properly but there is irresponsible owners out there who think cats dont need vaccinating or spaying,me and my neighbour was abit pee'd off when our dogs caught mange from the cats and it was very expensive to cure, the cats arent ferral theyre all tame and most belong to neighbours on the surrounding streets,if my dog attacked another dog then i would have to pay the vets bill but these cats are passing on diseases and other pet owners are footing the bill ,theyve already wiped out my angorra ferrets thru disease,i just feel helpless that i cant do anything about it

What disease did your ferrets catch off the cats ? It is extremely rare for cats to have mange so maybe it wasnt them. A lot of people are quick to blame cats for things that happen. This appears to go back to the days of witch hunts and ducking stools. If you have proof knock at the owners door and demand they keep the cats under control or if you live on a council estate why not complain?? Lots of others do. Maybe call the RSPCA or Enviromental health and explain the situation too
