Default Cockatiels......

Hello as well as having two snakes in the house we also have two cockatiels called upsey and daisy(strange names i know but they are my sons LOL). There both females and are now 8 months old.

One strange thing i noticed with them was that they e displaying mating behaviour so began to wonder wether they were indeed female.

So was thinking weather anyone else had tiels on here.

Blessed be

I used to have one ages ago & I want another now!

Mine always used to lay eggs though, even though she was never with any other cockatiels, if this helps?

I have, called Archie. At about 8 mnths old they are going through their first moult and this is when they start becoming sexually aware and basically they can become horny so display the mating behaviour you are seeing. If they are indeed female you will be able to tell after their first moult as this is when they can be visually sexed (if they are normals that is)

we have cockatiels and generally the females have the bars under the tails which the males don't, in the common greys the orange on the cheeks is much brighter on the males.

There lutinos so it can be damm hard to visually sex them. I know the maes are supposed to have slightly brighter cheeks and theres a difference inthe underside of the females tail feathers.

Also does everyone elses make a huge mess? Mine do where there cage is everything gets covered in a fine white powered and they like to flick there seeds everywhere LOL.

Ive got one of the Hagen vision cages and they are really good tends to keep the food and other bits in the cage. Ye dander gets everywhere. Try spraying them with warm water twice a week and it should lessen the amount of dander they produce. You can also buy commercially available dander down stuff that lessens the amount they produce. Not sure how well this works tbh.

me got tiels.
What colour are yours? You can usually tell by the undersides of their tails. The females are barred and the males are not.

Why does it surprise you that she laid eggs? Females of all species (including humans) produce eggs even if they don't live with males. I do, nuns do, schoolgirls do, chickens do. Egg production has nothing to do with whether a male is present or not. All his job is, is to fertilise the eggs.

Because none of any other birds we've had have laid eggs before.. just didn't think it happened unless they were fertilised..
