Smile The Beagle Appreciation Thread!

Ok, so when i move house i would really like a beagle. Although i've never seen many people with them!

Can anyone who has them post pictures and personnal experiences with them? Things such as amount of exercise, how they are with cats etc etc. Thanks XX

I have heard they can be very difficult to potty train, too.

I know one of the breed rescues are very strict as to who they home to.

I had one here once whilst it under went surgery on her hip, she was here for about 12 weeks, they were the longest weeks of my life.lol I would never have another Beagle in the house again. They are very intense dogs who need allot of stimulation, they arent great at being left, they need allot of training, and thats if they decide they want to listen to you and do what you ask them, they are scent dogs and if offlead you can easily loose one if they decide they have found something interesting to track. And there bark, I have never known another dog to bark like it (apart from a foxhound) I had a permenant headache for 12 weeks.

Although they are probably lovely dogs, you really do have to be a certain type of person to own one ( I would imagine a very patient person..lol) Hence the reason you not seeing many people with them..

I own a Beagle and i agree with most of what you say.
George is nearly 7 months old now and he's pretty good off the lead. I potty trained him in about 6 weeks i think, so he wasnt that bad really and now he will pee on command near enough He's very loving and loves to be with you which can be a pain in itself sometimes as if he wants attention you dont get any peace but then i suppose thats the same with any breed. I did leave him for periods of time though right from the 1st day we got him because i work in the days so he had to get used to being on his own. My garden is wrecked because of this but if he's having fun tearing round the garden and not wrecking my home then i really dont care
We went to our 1st obedience lesson tonight which was good. I want him to come when called and walk nice on a lead so we've been doing a bit of that tonight.
Beagles do have very selective hearing and are very stubborn. Yes they are hard to train but i shall keep you updated on his training.

Think what they were originally bred for. They were bred to follow the scent trail of prey across hills and dales for hours on end. So they require a lot of proper excersize. The trouble is that being hounds, once they get the scent of something interesting, they become deaf and forget all training so will ignore you and run for miles. This leads to a problem with actually giving them proper exersize since they need lots of off lead running, not just a couple of on lead walks around a park a day. They can tend to suffer from obesity too as they can tend to be greedy.
Lovely little dogs if you can fulfill their needs. I've never known a nasty or savage one personally.

Yes thats what ive been thinking about, the letting it off the lead part. I wasnt even considering getting one until i move to a bigger home with a garden it can have run of all day, but then how do you ensure no one steals him, or if he gets out? Ive been doing a lot of research into my favourite breeds, but these just seem to be my favourite. Not sure what to say about it if just shoots off, suppose i will have to get into cross-country running lol.
