Default Cat help

On thurs my cat ate a royal mail red elastic band. One of the really big thick ones. I took him to the vets straight away and he was given some liquid parafin to help it pass.

This morning when i cleaned the litter tray in his poo there was the band. I didnt inspect it, just noted it was there.

This evening he has been a bit out of character...... very quiet and he didnt want tea. I am a bit worried. I dont think any of the band is still in him but could it have done any harm to him?

In a word yes
If there is still some of it in there then it can cause what is called a linear foriegn body where it can cause the intestines to bunch up and he would need surgery for that
Also liquid paraffin is not really recommended in cats any more, lactulose is the product best used as liquid paraffin can cause side effects.
did you mix it with his food or put it straight in his mouth?

Could it be the liquid paraffin thats made him so unhappy? Cats and rubber bands are a nightmare Hopefully hes passed all of it and at least you noticed hed eaten it. If you are worried ring the emergency vet as information over the phone costs nothing. Some vets still use liquid paraffin as it oils the passage of foreign bodies so dont worry about giving him that

I had literally just taken the bands off my post...there were two of them and put them on the sofa and with that he ran off with one and ate it quickly!

Nightmere!

He seems ok this morning if crying outside my bedroom door at half four this morning for breakfast is anything to go by.

Maybe it was just the liquid paraffin. The vets have a surg open in the next town this morning so i am gonna give them a call when they are open just to be on the safe side.

he's probably just been feeling sorry for himself.. i know i would if i'd swallowed an elastic band, been fed parafin and then crapped the band back out again.

LOL - very true!!

Having said that, I heard a very sorry tale at the cat show yesterday from a lady who we always had a 'competition' with at cat shows, she had a beautiful female Birman who came up against our female Somali in the Grand Class and either one of us won and the other came second and we used to joke about how our hearts sank when we saw each other in the show hall! Well she was telling me yesterday that her vet syringed 10ml of liquid paraffin into her queen (who was quite old by then) and managed to put it straight into her lungs and she died half an hour later - she was devastated and I was nearly crying just hearing it!!

You have to be so careful syringing any fluid into a cat or any other animal for that matter!

This is why it is always suggested not to syringe medicines into a stressing cat, you can put it into chicken broth baby food usually, or if the cat is stressing put it under the tounge/to the side of the mouth a few drops at a time. I dread to think how many times our cats have eaten elastic bands , luckily they have only been the ones they use to keep ring boxes closed with so tiny and easy to pass.

Yeh, but try telling that to a vet!! She objected at the 10ml because she thought that was too much and he told her to stop fussing!!
