If your only there at the weekend that realy limitates your choices.. the only thing i could suggest is get your dad to get himself his "own" pet and play with it at the weekend or something as most rodents need there food topping up very often and water changing daily..

You could however get something like Giant african land snails.. not the most exciting of pets but very low maintainance.

Or even a tarantula... onlyneeds feeding once a week.. cheap and low maintainance..

Then i still dont recommend a hamster, i handle my hamsters daily and considering not all hamsters are the friendliest im sure your dads missus wont handle it. However i did get a syrian a while back and my mum said i wont be having no part of it.. and now she gets it out daily and treats it like her own... I do however have 3 adorable syrians avaliable.. the get handled everyday and dont bite.. at £4 each.. pickupo west yorkshire.

If you want something u carnt realy handle too much anyway get trio of roborovski's.. 3 females in a RUB with holes drilled in the side with a water bottle and food bowl. A wheel.. some tubes (toilet and kitchen roll tubes worki aswell) and for substrate i dont use wood shavings.. i use sand.. not many people do but thats what they live on in the wild. Unfortunatly i dont breed these no more so carnt provide you with calm species.. but your looking around £6-£9 for babys.

You could try mice... mice dont perticularlly need handling every day... there funny to watch and some can be great to handle. Both my females are great to handle. Probly around £1-£4 for a baby mouse.

Orrr... you could always get a leo.. they dont need handling daily.. i do personally but leos can be a observation pet.... need feeding a few live insects a day.. water changed daily (although i do it every two days). All they need is a secure enclosure with a heatmat places 1/3rd of the enclosure. A RUB is fine with a substrate of tissue paper or you could use reptile carpet which i use. Mine poos in the corner of his viv so i remove every day if possible. Your looking at £20 - £40 for a leo..

Good luck.. if you decide to choose any animal just PM me and ill send you a homemade caresheet.

Big fat NO, sorry hun
They need hay topping up/refreshing daily, a small amount of pellets given daily and ideally a small amount of veggies daily (Usually if possible on a daily or everyother day basis CJ gets romaine lettuce, tomato, tiny piece of carrot, coriander, mint, bell pepper). They can also be given grass, safe weeds, safe flowers etc.
They should be handled daily to keep tame and checked over for anything abnormal. I prefer to observe CJ for about 20 mins daily to make sure everything is in check (that includes checking for signs of bloat, gas, URI's, UTI's, oral problems etc) as when a rabbit shows any sign of illness it is usually very far progressed because they hide pain/illness until it is almost impossible to(rabbits have been known to hide broken toes until they are healed so much they cant be fixed back properly) .
They need pretty big housing, at least a 2'x3' cage for a breed such as a lionhead and mini-rex is recommended, 2'x4' for Polish, Netherland Dwarves, Dutch, dwarf lop, Standard Rex etc, 2'x5' for a french lop sized rabbit and so on. They should also be let out daily for a good run around in a secure room or pen (at least 3x the size of the cage) for at least an hour per day (prefer 2-4).
Grooming as needed.
You should keep two together. They should be spot-cleaned daily, the good news is they can be litter trained most of the time.

Good Choice Then

As for the RUB make sure you get a 84ltr and no smaller.. a adult syrian can easily climb to the top and possibly chew there way out if it was any smaller.

To give you a little idea on how my RUBS are setup for rodents:

And heres Houdini inside his RUB:

As for food i use a Mix of Harry Hamster and some mixed up ones made by my local petshop. I also sprinkle a light dusting of crushed up cuttlefish for extra calcium to make bones grow strongerer

Also for ventilation a drill will make short work of it. On the sides of the RUBS there are like little bumps and these are perfect for drilling your holes.. look behind the hamster:

Good luck
