Its a baby blackbird and should really have been left where it was found. The parents would almost certainly have been looking after it. When they first leave the nest they are not very good flyers and tend to just flutter about amongst any shrubbery that will provide them with cover. The parents will track them down to feed them.
It will probably be too late now to return it to where its come from. The parents will have assumed that it has perished. So you will have to feed it. Blackbirds are insectivorus so it will require foods such as mealworms, waxworms, crickets etc. It will also take earthworms so get out in the garden and do some digging !!! Hope it survives, good luck Phil. |

cheers re both above....
I would normally leave them where they are found but the bloke who had it had been wandering around with it and was vauge where he got it from, so i didnt want to just leave it - also it was in a car park near a load of houses - so if the cars didnt get it a cat probably would have got it. If it makes it through the night i'll stop by my local rep shop and get some bits and pieces for it. If it eats readily are they easy to keep going? if so i'd love to give it a go and release it when its ready which cant be too long - it looks as though some of the flight feathers are coming through |

Birds have fast metabolisms and need to feed regularly to fuel this, so if this little fella hasn't eaten for a while it will soon go downhill. If it will take it try offering some tinned cat food tonight, but you will need to force feed it as it won't just eat it by itself. At least that way it will get some nourishment until you can get some other stuff tomorrow.
As for the feathers it already has a full set of flight feathers, it just needs to build up its flight muscles so that it can use them. The only way to do this is by practising and exercising them so be prepared for it to take off at any time, and keep the cat away from it if it does. |

update....
Bird survived the night, and was quite alert in the morning - i was able to get some more pieces of cat food into it and contacted the RSPCA and arranged for them to collect it as i couldnt commit the time to properly care for it - blummin work commitments RSPCA collected it at around 12:00 and were suprised as how good a condition it was in... Cheers for the advice above ![]() this small act of mercy made my week |
