Well, as no-one else has posted this - this is the response I got to the complaint I made following Fenny's link to their website:
The incident has caused immense shock and sadness throughout the force. I can assure you that we take this matter very seriously and the actions of the force and the individual will be thoroughly investigated. We reported the death of two German shepherd police dogs to the RSPCA, who are now conducting the inquiry. The welfare of our animals is a major concern to us and we are working closely with the RSPCA to establish what happened. We also informed the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) who have since decided the incident should be investigated internally by Nottinghamshire Police. In due course a report will also be given to the Nottinghamshire Police Authority, who have a duty to scrutinise the work of the force and hold the Chief Constable to account. The bond and the love between the trainers, handlers and the dogs is absolutely outstanding. The dog unit and the individual concerned are absolutely devastated by what has happened and we can only imagine what they are going through after losing two of their own team. You may be interested to know that Nottinghamshire Police has its own Animal Welfare Lay Visitors Scheme. This is a group of dedicated members of the public who ensure that our animal welfare is of the highest standards. They are overseen by the police authority and will be included in our internal investigation. Any updates on this incident will be published in the near future Once again thank you for contacting us. If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact us again. Yours ACC Davies Nottinghamshire Police

Did you fill in the bit about "would you prefer a response by telephone or e-mail" - in other words indicating that you expected a reply?
I imagine the one I got will be a stock reply that will be e-mailed out to everyone who said they wanted a reply by e-mail.
