Default Meet The Parrots

Next weekend, Saturday 19th & Sunday 20th September, I am holding another 'Meet The ....." event. This time it is Meet The Parrots.

I am taking my 4 parrots to work for the event, & I am borrowing 3 of my friend's parrots. There will be:

Rosie, my Galah Cockatoo
Lola, my Blue-Fronted Amazon
Spike, my Black-Headed Caique
Jaffa, my Sun Conure
Babe, my friend's Medium Sulphur Crested Cockatoo
Sprout, my friend's Military Macaw, &
Rory, my friend's Scarlet Macaw

The weekend event is intended to educate the public more about owning a parrot. I have written the story of Rory, the Scarlet Macaw out & made it into a poster for people to read. Basically he was bought, stuck in a tiny cage which was padlocked shut, he lived like this for 14 years before my friend rescued him, had to cut off the padlock, & now poor Rory cannot fully open his wings due to the damage of not being able to exercise.

The parrots will be on stands in the animal room, where I will be sat with them. They are all fully flighted so could fly about if they wished (apart from Rory). It will be nice for people to see such a varied group of parrots & to learn about them.

What a brilliant idea! I wish I wasn't so far away...

I have wanted a moluccan cockatoo for almost twenty years. I have never yet got one though, as I feel they are just too big a commitment, both in terms of time and energy. (and money too) I suspect that plenty of people do just buy them though, especially these days when people have more disposable income, so seeing them and hearing about how demanding these birds can be, and what it takes to really look after them properly can only be a good thing.

Maybe one day for me....

Thanks Midori & Rach! Its just a way of educating the public whilst making it fun really.

Midori, Molluccan Cockatoos are so beautiful aren't they, but boy are they a commitment. One I don't think I could take. My friend who I am lending the 2 Macaws & the Sulphur Crest off had a Molluccan up until a year ago, called Oscar. He was another rescue bird, & he was a lovely gentle big boy. Unfortunately Oscar was lost to cancer, after much nursing & TLC from his 'dad' Ivor.

An essential website for anyone thinking about getting a Cockatoo, particularly an Umbrella or Molluccan, is www.mytoos.com
