Default Welcome Sirius.

So yesterday we got a new kitten! He came from the lovely ladies here. i went to get a little bouncy kitten but came away with the saddest looking more terrified little kitten i've ever seen. He was literally shaking he was so scared. Apparently the a couple of weeks before the rescue had a call from a farmer saying he'd caught kittens and their mum and if they didn't come and pick them up by the end of the day he was going to drown then So of course they picked them up, and brought them home. The mum is completely feral and extremely viscious but the kittens showed no signs of aggressive, they were just terrified. The kittens were left with mum until 8 weeks (to build them up, due to mums poor diet they were tiny, skinny things) so have had very little human interraction. The first kitten left about 5 days ago and has already come out of his shell - my poor little kitty has hid since he got here but it's only been a little more than 24 hours. He's eating, and using his litter tray - just not when we're in the room He is however letting me stroke him, and taking the odd treat from my hand which I consider fantastic progress in such a short time. I'm sure by the end of the week he'll be my new best friend (and Hiro's too hopefully!). He and Hiro haven't met yet, we decided to let him settle a bit before that. We decided to name him Sirius, after Sirius Black from Harry Potter Anyway that was a bit of a ramble, so here are some pics!

And because I can't post kitty pics without some of my main man, here he is!

I would also like to say thanks to feorag and Shell195 for their help and advice

He's a lovely boy and I'm so pleased you chose him, because you are taking your time and getting him settled and, like you, I'm sure you will all be best friends by next week!

Ok...so...

I decided that seeing Hiro with me might help make Sirius realise that i'm ok, and nice to cats that kind of thing. So I let Hiro in the room, and while he was sniffing around at the litter tray etc Sirius started getting really interested and actually came out from hiding. This Hiro turned round and started hissing and growling like mad. Kitten retreats.
Now I know that Hiro is doing this out of fear. I picked Hiro up and sat him on me where he was practically clinging on but still hissing etc. When my OH came home and into the room Hiro tried to run out the room, but we closed the door. When he couldn't see the kitten he chilled out a bit, and after a while was playing with he stick with feathers on. When i left the room he darted out. While he was playing though, Sirius was peeping out and mewing.

I'm not really sure how to proceed now. Do I keep bringing Hiro into the room until he just gets over it? I'm hoping if I do this then Sirius will eventually be brave enough to venture out - I know he wants company, he was so interested when Hiro first came into the room, and if you've been in the room and leave it he mews.

Anyway, help please

Yes, I would! A session every day will be all it needs for Hiro to realise that this little critter that he doesn't recognise isn't anything to be frightened of.

Sometimes a good idea is to get a feather teaser or fishing line and start to play with one of the cats. Often the other cat can't help themselves but join in and they are both so interested in the toy that they don't realise how close they are.

If Hiro is playing with his feather teaser, then try to keep him occupied and see if the kitten might join in.

I was hoping he might but I think (heartbreakingly enough) he doesn't know how to play He does watch it though, but it's more of a wary eye than anything. Hopefully he'll learn from Hiro, the big soft git
