Default My new syrian needs a name.. & pic of my pirate mousey!!

Ive kept and bred different dwarf hamsters but never owned a syrian, as James's sisters syrian is the softest bugger ever i decided a syrian would be next on my list, so eventually I got this little guy on sunday, upon getting him home he bit me so ive been letting him settle down, given him tissues for bedding with my scent, giving him treats when he has come to the bars of his cage etc and hopefully he will calm and tame down.

He is a lovely tri-colour, im guessing he will be long/semi-long haired as his fur is still very whispy. Now he needs a name, Marley has been the best suggestion so far but im still unsure at the moment, so heres some pics

I also have to share this picture of "Pirate Mousey" as he has a pirate patch on his face which i find absolutly adorable ever since his fur began to come through he has been my favorite!

Awww - I love that pirate mouse, you should call him Jack

Your sirian looks a sweetie too. Just a tip though - don't feed him treats through the bars as this can encourage them to snatch and bite at anything they can reach (including fingers) through the bars as they mature. A better idea would be to put a treat in the palm of your hand and lay it flat on the cage floor so he gets used to the feeling of walking about on it.

It will be jack if he is a boy pirate mousey may have to stick if its a girl as I cant think of any girly pirate related names

I dont think ill be palm feeding him just yet never been bit before despite owning and breeding many, he has made be a bit nervouse as he races about his cage. I know of more people bit by syrians than dwarfs yet they are sold as a "child friendly" pet. I still love him he was probably scared out of his mind after being moved from his siblings and put it a dark box and bounced about in a car!

Pretty sure your hammie is a girl, going by the coloration. Pretty sure "he" is a dilute tortie, which would make "him" a she. And "he" needs a bigger wheel Those wheels are really only suitable for dwarf hamsters.

Yeah I know thankyou s/he has a nice big silent spinner now, that was just temporary until it arrived

S/he did have tortie siblings (which i know are generally female but was told they were all male), id have preffered the darker ones colourwise other than I didnt like the solid black faces they had. I havnt had a chance to sex him/her as ive not been handling yet after being bit. If he turns out to be she I wont mind as I did want a female but there was only the "males" avaialble.

Your 'girl' is a dove tort so has to be female.

Dove torts are a begger to breed as well mine took ages to get pregnant and when she did she ate the whole litter....

They seem to be funny temperament wise as well I've never had anice friendly dove tort.
Other torts are fine but all my dove ones, even those I bought so not related doves, were nippy.

I'd love a friendly dove tort though but then I'm tort mad.

I thought s/he was a dove tortie/tricolour, but i struggled finding pictures online to confirm it. I scooped her up in a tub and let her come out onto my lap, she ran up and down my arm without biting me she does seem to be calming down a bit, but just going to handle her little and often and hope for no more bites

For some reason the dove torts are just that little bit more feisty or at least the ones I've had have been.
I'd take it slowly and still expect the odd nip.
Mine got to the point where I could handle them, with care, when they got iritated though I soon put them back in their cages.
It's the price we pay for wanting something a little bit special though. They are gorgeous hams.
