Am I missing something, I didn't see where the OP said his dog has bitten before? I did read all the posts last night, but I was tired!

In the original post they say that the dog is pestered, then it bites. They don't say they think he might bite, and the owner hasn't denied it since (in fact they say they've told the children that "he bites"), so I think it's fair to assume the dog has bitten more than once.

i can understand where your coming from with the whole nervous running away bit, my dogs the same with people altho he has never snapped or even growled. and people not listening when you say leave him is very annoying, people see my dog (bichon frise) and are like "aww he is cute" go to stroke him and he runs and hides behind my legs so i say "he is nervous of people dont throw yourself on him let him come to you if he wants" yet the still keep going at him grr! altho as i said im lucky as he has never been agressive towards anyone.

i would suggest a muzzle. More than anything to protect your dog, the last thing you need is someone to make a complaint which results in him being PTS. also the suggestion of being reffered to a behaviourist was a good one, they are wonderful people and can teach you amazing things to help, our bullmastiff had terrible fear agression and after only one 2 hour session she seems so much better, its very much about being confident in yourself and your dog, but there are other factors too, i would indeed look into a behaviourist and in the mean time buy him a lil muzzle to save him from a horrible end

He hasn't bitten anyone, but he has snapped at them if they carry on pestering. Lisa - what so you mean by the (hmm) part? It sounds as if you are saying I'm lying.

If he wasn't on the lead then he probably would never have any trouble with anyone. I think it's because he can't get away that he's doing it in the first place.

This is exactly what I thought was meant in the opening post. Maybe people should unload the guns a bit here. I reckon Luke's probably going to try a muzzle or something anyway, after hearing the successes people have had with them.

I said hmm because I've managed to get a whopping great dane away from pestering people, let alone a small breed that you could easily walk away or at the worst - pick up and walk away with.

I dont think it was a case of "I couldn't get them away from him". Because you probably could have.

Sounds to me like a classic case of a Dog that has not been socialised properly as a pup. Agree with most, get a muzzle & walk where there aren't any young kids about, if you see kids you simply turn round & walk the other way. SIMPLES . But then at 13 you wouldn't have that sort of sense to do that. Sorry but a 13 year old shouldn't be left in charge of a Dog that has the tendancy to bite (or even snap at kids). No kid should be in charge of a Dog without a parent about. Not 100% sure but think it is law that children (under 16) shouldn't be in charge of Dogs on their own. Perhaps somebody will correct me if i'm wrong but i'm pretty sure it's right.

Thats the most stupid thing I've ever heard to be honest. Your trying to tell me that a 13 year old can't walk a dog?
