Default Barn Owls

Is there anyone on here that keeps them? Im looking into the possibility of keeping a pair or two and would appreciate anyone who personally keeps them or knows about them.

Cheers

James

Do you want Barn owls to train to fly free, or as aviary birds? Because as aviary birds they are pretty pointless, as they spend the day tucked away in a box.

I hand-reared a Barn owl from it being a 3 week old chick, & he grew into the most gorgeous of critters! I named him Angel.

Strongly agreed! Besides that, they are very energetic once they wake up and deserve to have space to fly (preferably flying free) and plenty of mental stimulation, not tucked up in an aviary all day.

Yup! And what better way to enjoy the companionship of a Barn owl than to have it flying free once trained!

Yeah, I especially love first free flights, despite it being very nerve wrecking, it's lovely to see them finally out in the trees doing there own thing.

When they are imprinted properly, the same thing that stops a dog running away! With most Hawks (Harris', Red tails, etc) and Falcons (Kestrels, etc) it's generally agreed that parent reared is best, so the fact that you have food is enough to stop them flying away. However, owls that have been imprinted properly build up a bond just like any dog would (except their idea of affection is plucking your eye lashes) and believe they are human, so they will stick close when out flying free. Of course, it's always suggested you use telemetry with Birds of prey, especially owls, due to them having no crop if they are food imprinted.
