It depends on the breed and circumstances really. I had my small dogs castrated at 8 months and my Rottie at 16 months

Springers aren't particularly big, and depending on his temperament I would get it out of the way at 5-6 months old. Otherwise the big boy behaviour becomes habit, so any sexual behaviours he develops may not go away if he's neutered later.

Our previous vet had a thing about castrating dogs and used to make everyone attend a pre operation counselling session so he could explain that it would turn the dog into a cabbage
Needless to say he is no longer our vet![]()
