Question Urban chicken keeping

Anyone keep chickens in an urban environment?

Me and my house mate are considering getting some and we live in a typical urban estate-ish setting!

Prob get a coop for the day so they're safe while we work, and let them out in the morning and evening and/or weekend.

Get a good book. I'm getting mine in a few weeks. When you mean coop do you mean run? Cos you can't leave them in the house all day. Read my thread, lots of questions answered in there.

Yeah - chicken coop/run - tomato/tomato?

They won't be in the house. So we need a secure place for them while we're out.

Just making sure Try reading Choosing and Keeping Chickens - Chris Graham, it's a nice book.

There's a lot to learn, but the more you reseach, the more I see that it isn't a million miles away from keeping rabbits really.

Get any of the keeping chickens books by Katie Thear
Her books are fab and by far the best no nosense books.

Don't go for Leghorns, they are seriously noisey birds lol

Certain breeds are flighty and tend to not do well in small urban gardens. They end up in everyone elses gardens and trees.

All depends on what your after. A mix of hybrids would be nice. Like Bluebell, Warren, Amberlink, Blackrock. Nice mix of colours of nice calm birds.
My Hybrids follow us everywhere and will come in house and sit on sofa if door is left open in the summer.

Or of space is an issue, Bantams in certain breeds are lovely but again some are highly flighty where as others are extermly docile.
My bantam leghorns are nuts lol But my polands (15 in white, cuckoo, Chamois and white crested Black/Blue in Frizzle and smooth feather) Pekins, and Japanese Bantams are cute as. We also have Bantam Buff Orpington, Bantam Buff Sussex, Bantam Rhode Island Red, Bantam OEG and Bantam Silver Laced Dotties.
Large Breeds we have Buff Orpington, Salmon Fav, Welsummer, Copper Black French Maran, Cuckoo Maran, Lavender Orpington, Cream Crested Legbars (my sons pride and joy) and Double/Blue laced Barnevelders.
And a few other odds and sods lol But hubby's fav is 'MR President' his Silver Partridge Bahrma Cockeral. He's soooooooo snuggley!

and Breath!!!!!!!

Make sure you're allowed to keep them as well.

Many farm animals, including chickens are illegal on our road. It's written into the deeds of the house that you can't keep them.

Our last house was the same.

Aye, if it's a rented property aswell. You will need to make sure you get permission and that it is not written into the deeds of no livestock or no poultry. Very oddly some Deeds have it written in no poultry yet you could keep a couple of pigs.
I'm Freehold, would only get freehold and read the deeds beforehand.
On the top half of my garden I can't have a craft stall or a carnie festival (I know!! Bizarro!!!) But on the bottom half I can lol
