if a dog bites a child i think its a totally different situation and other options should be considered aswell as rehoming
some dogs stop eating and curl up when they live with familes and in places they arent happy with

I think this poem somes rehoming up. I agree that sometimes rehoming is the only option
We have this on our sanctuary wall

Baggage (The Meaning of Rescue)

Now that I'm home, bathed, settled and fed,
All nicely tucked in my warm new bed,
I'd like to open my baggage,
Lest I forget,
There is so much to carry,
So much to regret.
Hmmm...Yes, there it is, right on the top,
Let's unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss,
And there by my perch hides Fear and Shame.
As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave,
I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain.
I loved them, the others, the ones who left me,
But I wasn't good enough - for they didn't want me.
Will you add to my baggage?
Will you help me unpack?
Or will you just look at my things,
And take me right back?
Do you have the time to help me unpack?
To put away my baggage, to never repack?
I pray that you do - I'm so tired you see,
But I do come with baggage,
Will you still want me? By Evelyn Colbath(c)1995 Baggage All rights reserved

though it is upsettin to read, remember that was written by a human, not a dog, they are puttin human emotion onto a dog to play with your heart strings. thats probably not even close to what goes through a dogs mind.
I doubt it would have had the same effect if the author wrote "hungry hungry hungry want to play hungry bark hungry pee want to play hungry". The whole point is that its supposed to move people to the plight of the homeless dog, not to be a psychological analysis of a dog. I dont understand the need for this comment really. If its to defend the fact that you took your dog to be rehomed - I imagine your situation and attitude was very different to that of the callous owner described in the text, so don't see it as an attack. I for one wont be going around judging everyone thats ever had to rehome a pet just because I was moved by this story.

no i just dont like the fact that its been posted to make people feel guilty about turning to shelters and dog homes when both themselves and their dogs are in need. The other alternative is to get the dog they can no longer keep put down if they cant rehome privately, and im pretty sure id definately rather turn to a shelter than to a vet to have it pts

They should feel guilty if they dont try and find their dog a home. We all know a dog will live 10-16 years, its a big dessision to have one. They rely on us to care for them and some people, not all, but some think as soon as they cant be bothered with their loyal friend they will dump them at at shelter. But i do agree that if you have tried to rehome your dog, it is better to go to a none distruction shelter (along with a donation!) rather than PTS or dumped on the streets.

I would rather live on the streets with my dog than 'get rid of him',

Who said they didnt try to find the dog a home?
Sometimes its hard to find things a home!! Doesnt mean the owner didnt try though did it.

oh my god that is the worst thing i have ever read i feel so dipressed right now!!!!! i feel awfull i very nearly rehomed my black lab as i didnt think he was happy here with us but when it actually came to doing i looked at his soppy little face i just couldn't do it, it was like he knew.
but we stuck with trying and now he goes to work everyday with my partner to the nursing home he loves it and is so much happier and he also now gets on like a house on fire with his sister probably beacause he doesn't have to see her all day!

so happy i didn't go thrue with it don't think i could live with my self especially after reading that.

love you raven and oshun promise you are both with me for life!!!

I dont think its saying that at all. The fictional owner in this instance has clearly lost all interest in the dog and makes no effort to try and rehome, and isnt even upset at handing his dog in. I think these are the people that its highlighting as being the problem. Even the best-meaning owner may one day find themselves in the situation that they have to rehome a dog - for an owner that cares I imagine it would be a hugely upsetting event, not at all callous owner here. People should never feel guilty if they genuinely believe that its in everyones best interest to rehome, dog included - there is no shame in admitting that, after exhausting all possibilities, that a pet simply isnt for you. We cant all read the future and know how everything will pan out! On the other hand if someone simply "want rid" and has no concerns about the welfare of their former pet then they should really rethink being responsible for animals in the future.
