Default What is this?

Following on from the choke chain thread can anyone tell me what this is? Someone gave it to me as a "lead" for my dog but it has no clip to clip it on to the collar just a noose that cannot be undone. Is this something used to strangle the dog to "train" it? Sorry if I sound stupid but I wont ever use it and just wondered if it is it what is seems? Iv never heard of a rope noose attatched to a handle "ckoke" thing... I hate the thing

That is a slip lead, you loop it over the dog's head. They do tighten similarly to a choke chain, but they should have a mechanism to stop them going too tight (generally a leather flap that apparently stops the loop tightening beyond a certain point). The flap isn't failsafe though. They're not made specifically for choking dogs, but they do tighten a lot if not used correctly. Useful for catching stray collarless dogs although I wouldn't use one as a permanent lead.

"Slip" lead doesn't refer to what you'd think it does. It's made for an easy 'Slip' when using dogs (usually Spaniels of some breed) for hunting. It should NEVER be used for an untrained dog, they are used because they are comfortable on trained dogs and it means the dog doesn't need to have a collar hanging around and it's much easier for it's leader to 'Slip' the dog. That said, that's a strange slip lead, and it shouldn't be made like that. There should be a goat or 'roo leather Tab on the 'leash' part or it to stop the Slip becoming too loose.

There is, its near the noose bit on the pic. It slides up and down the lead section which I suppose defeats the object of it being there????

Yes, but it shouldn't be around the collar, it should be on the leash part where the ring would push up against it, to stop the Slip being able to widen so fat that it wouldn't respond to a dog back out of it.

i use one of those slip leads for my german shepherd.
then again he does walk to heel and if he stops to sniff the lead slackens.

i don't use a collar on him i hate collars they used to rub his fur away even when i could get two fingers under it.

also he got his claw stuck whilst scratching himself.

he's micro chipped.

also with a collar and lead dogs have a tendancy to slip there collar if the dog pulls backwards.

So the tag is to stop it opening (and therefore facilitate choking) rather than to stop it being dangerous? You learn something new every day!

No, that isn't at all what I said. The tab is stop the the Slip widen so much that it wouldn't respond to a dog that would try and back out of it whilst sitting. It doesn't facilitate chokeing, at all.
