Where she is licking might be where she is sore. She can't get through the skin to the point of pain so will be licking the closest bit she can to it.

now i never thought of that but it does make sense ....what can i put on her to maybe deter her from licking and to help reduce the soreness until i speak to my vet

This is very true, i have known many dogs (especially with arthritis) lick problem joints for hours!!!!

To stop licking you need no-lick or bitter apple or a "hood collar" so she cant reach it.

the only main side effect of metacam is gut upset so vomiting and diarrhoea and possibly in rare cases GI ulceration. if you see any vomiting or d+ then stop the metacam straight away
i think the licking is prob to do with her sore area, a buster collar is prob your best bit as the sprays could aggrevate the area more esp if it looks sore

yeah i know the normal side affects as used it with my male dog.......a buster would work but tbh i am reluctant to use one as she bashes about in one and could knock my poorly retriever over and that i dont want to risk, just keeping close eye on her as she does stop when told to ....will speak to my vet in the morning about it
