Default Cat litter...

Probably a daft question but is it possible for a cat to have a preference for a certain type of litter?

Thanks for any replies

Definitely! One of our cats, Kimi, wont use wood pellets or rough clay type litters, and her brother Leo wont use anything too fine. The 3rd, Eddie, isn't at all fussy though.

Thanks

I've been using Sophisticat Pink litter ever since I got our cats and I've always had a problem with WoW (our male cat) doing his business on the floor if the litter tray wasn't clean enough (or that's what I think the reason is). Over Christmas and New Year I totally forgot to order a bag of litter so ended up purchasing the really naff cheap stuff from a supermarket just to tide us over - in that 10 day period he only went on the floor once! I know it's still one time too many but we're finally getting somewhere lol.

Bizarre that he prefers the rougher, dustier stuff but whatever floats his boat is fine with me!

Yeah our male likes the Tescos natural rubbish lol. I figure it's 'cause it's easier for him to dig and hide his mess in, but that's just a theory!

definatly, my cat who is going senile lol prefurs the floor right next to the litter tray!

he usualy goes out side, but with his old age, we want to give him the option of going during the night with out waking us all up!

but it fails...often and he just goes by it...rather than in it

And some cats dont like to share trays either
Most cats prefer the sand type litter but luckily mine will use the wood pelleted one as I can flush the waste down the toilet

Absolutely!

I guarantee 99.99% that if you put out 3 litter trays, one with the big sawdust pellets, one with a fullers earth clay type litter and one with a very fine sandy type litter - every cat will choose the sandy litter.

It's easier to dig, easier to bury and easier on their feet and they prefer it, especially if they are indoor cats who never walk on concrete.

There are more litter breakdowns when owners change to the pelleted cat litter than any other type of litter.

Where do I find the sandy stuff? I don't think I've seen that in any of the pet shops around here

I've tried some wood stuff before, had the same problems with him on that too, plus they seemed to go through looooooads more lol

I haven't changed litter for years, not since I went onto Oko Plus which I absolutely swear by! It's a wood based litter, which is much cheaper than any other by usage (not when buying) cleaner and less smelly, finer for the cats and lighter for me to carry!

Previous to that I'd tried every other kind, pelleted sawdust, newspaper, corn kernels, fullers earth, silica gel and the fine sand. The sand was great but when it first came out over here, many years ago it was very expensive and we had about 5 litter trays running at the time (more if we had a litter of kittens!) so it was just too expensive and I always went back to Naturecat Gold as the best clumping clay litter that didn't cost the earth, but lasted well imao.

If you do some research you will find a few fine sand-type litters available.
