Can you meet the needs of either dog. Malamute generally don't make good pets they are eager to work.
Akitas have a short fuse and are easily turned to the dark side.

definately, see ive heard that malmute are generally better to deal with and akitas can become a nightmare! i love both breeds, their intellience and the sheer amazingness of both breeds just dont know which breed is better in a house with 2cats, an older dog a young dog and visiting children?!

had dogs my whole life so not a novice

They are totally different breeds with different needs and requirements - read very fully about the traits and personalities of the breeds.

Malamutes enjoy a good 2 hours exercise daily and with insufficient exercise do not make the greatest pets.

They look similar superficially but very different.

If you decide on either do make sure that you but from health tested registered parents - dreaful health issues in BYB Malamutes - a pup should be from parents with hips BVA scored and current clear eye tests - good breeders also work or show their dogs successfully .. there are loads of bad breeders and their dogs often have poor temperaments.

Likewise akitas - so many with ify temperaments - choose lines very carefully.

Akita males often won't tolerate another male in the house. What sexes are the Dogs you already have & what sex Akita or Malamute were you looking at getting? Akita's are lovely but very strong willed & need firm confident handling. Malamutes would need loads of exercise or you could have a Dog that barks & howls all day through lack of stimulation (not very good on your neighbours).

Akitas are well known not to get along with same sex dogs. You wont find many rescues, including breed rescue and some breeders, that will rehome an Akita to a home with another dog the same sex as them.

I know people who do keep same sex Akitas, but if they do they can keep them seperate and are with them all the time. But even then problems can and do arise. They are best kept as only dogs or with one other of the oposite sex.

Both of the dogs you have chosen are high maintenance dogs in exercise, mental stimulation, training and an experienced owner.

I would do allot of research and spend some time with both breeds before even considering either of them.

If I had to chose one, I'd go for the Akita and I'd get a bitch. Realistically, I wouldn't want either.
