Default Micro Chipping

Is mirco chipping worth it?

I'm asking this as I've been advise that it's really no point having it done (not from a vet of course).
He said that even if your dog does get lost then when it is found they will only scan the back of the neck... therefore if the micro chip has shifted thenthey won't find it.

Our other dog had his micro chip at his second lot of injections as a puppy and now it has shifted down to his shoulder (he's now 4)
Just wondering whether getting our 7month is worth doing when he get's neutered.

Any advice please?

I thought the whole body was scanned when picked up. I have always had my animals done and will continue to do so.

Anyone whos qualified to micro chip will NOT just scan the back of the neck, as yes they can move a bit so the first area to scan will be the neck and shoulders, but if not found then they should scan the whole body

I think it's better to be chipped, at least if the worst happens then you have a chip as proof of id and ownership, whereas an un chipped dog can be harder to prove ownership should the worst happen......especially if the people who find a lost dog grow attatched to it

Hope it helps

I am a qualified chipper and have had petlog give my numbers to vets when animals are taken as accident victims to them and they can't get hold of the owner - more than one I've had to give permission to pts due to the injuries they've received.

Most chippers ie private like me check the whole body, had the local dog warden bring a dog to me a while back saying it was a schip and had not been chipped could we take it for breed rescue. I said no coz I knew it was a baby from my champion male that I'd chipped for a fellow breeder 2 yrs previously. Sure enough the chip was there where I'd implanted it so he was reunited with his owner.

Sorry to hi-jack, but just wondering if anyone can give me some advice on micro chipping.
We rehomed a dog in October who had already been chipped. We have all her information, and are looking to get the chips info changed to our own, but it would seem "pet log" don't want to know... what can I do?

Rain, you need to go to the company website that the chip was done from and change the details on there, I checked this out recently as my father in laws dog was rehomed and we wanted to check how to change the new owner details

I do think it is very worth getting any possible roaming animal chipped, I mean a frog or a gecko then no lol but dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, anything that can escape I would say, I am in the middle of getting my 10 ferrets done at the moment

To change details without previous owners permission isn't easy as the whole point is to reunite dogs with owners.

You need to ring petlog explain the situation to them and ask them to write to the breeder/previous owner, if listed, for permission to contact them directly to get a letter giving consent to do the change of details.

I will give you an example of what can happen in these circumstances from petlog's point of view and why they need to be sure of any changes.

I have chipped a dog in the past that was re chipped without owners knowledge, said dog was reported stolen yet the new 'owners' used the orginal owners/breeders details for the new chip - very odd. Petlog notified said breeder of a request to change details on this dog, she said no it is listed as stolen. They asked if they could pass her details to the new owners which she permitted. New owners are now claiming the dog was an award in a court case they won - which is very odd as the breeder has won her court case against some individuals who refused to return her dogs last yr. Top and bottom of it is Petlog now need proof of court award to send to breeder for confirmation of said dogs identity, breeder has already sent copies of court award which lists 1 dog to be kept by the losing parties.

If their paperwork does not tally with hers from the courts the dog will be removed from them by the police as stolen property and returned to the breeder.
