Just thought I'd let you all know, our website now has a guestbook for people to leave comments - no censorship, say what you want - good or bad, I just want visitors to have an unbiased view of the charity.

Several weeks ago, I told of a pet shop I had reported to our friends, the RSPCA. Everyone remember? The one feeding cat biscuits to tortoises? Good.

Had the RSPCA Inspector call me back. He has been and discovered nothing actionable!!!

Apparantly cat biscuits are good for tortoises as a supplementary vitamin. This may be true - I have neglected my chelonia studies.

Apparantly, exposed heatmats in vivs are completely fine as they cannot damage a reptile!! Never seen a beardie with heatstroke then????

Apparantly, UV was present in most vivs, so thats fine (what about the others?), and a lack of thermostats and thermometers is only something the RSPCA can advise on.

It beggars belief, it really does.

Gonna sit and sulk about it.

Quick reminder - It's Christmas soon, in case anyone had forgotten.

Our policy is that we never rehome any animal in December, with the honourable exception of those arranged at the back end of November where collection has to be december.

So after this weekend, don't ask - you can't have.

Hi Alan

I know this time of year often is busy rescue wise so if you need any help (or word of mouth) for the small furries, give me a yell. I have a few fosters here and am humming and haaing about whether to put their homing on hold til after Christmas too, but luckily the fosters I have need experienced (and therefore less likely to be fickle) homes. I have two rats going through drug withdrawal that will not go anywhere now sadly.

Take care

Kathy

Hi Kathy,

Thanks for the offer. Funnily enough, winter tends to be quiet for reptiles and exotics, quite the opposite of everything else.

The rehoming shutdown is to prevent animals becoming Christmas presents. We argue for hours whether this actually happens, and why only Christmas - what about birthdays and rabbits at easter etc.etc.

One thing we might be able to help each other with - I have a waiting list for Chinchillas, believe it or not, so if you have any looking for homes - good homes await here.

Hi Kerrie,

We have rehomed as far as the Scottish Borders, Bath and Ireland, but it is simply uneconomical to rehome most animals too far, as the new home are responsible for the travelling costs. Even the most ardent rehomer is unlikely to spend £60 on fuel and a days travelling to rehome a corn snake or a beardie. It only usually happens with the odd rare beastie that comes in, but if people can collect, we never say no based on distance.

Hi Alan

Haven't had any chinchillas here for a while. Had mice and rats and even some guinea pigs this year, but no chins. Completely agree with the shutdown for Xmas - I tend to deflect new owners around this time for the same reasons. It's different for me being involved in the rat fancy though as I do know people who are "trustworthy" who I would home to at this time of year. Saying that, noone wants the rats at the minute, mainly because they're not cute baby ones, they're rats with baggage. With the exception of the mum of the drug withdrawal boys who is a gorgeous, sweet girl but hasn't had a peep of interest. Shame as she could be in a new home for Christmas being spoiled rotten. She'll have to make do with me instead for now lol.

You need to keep me away from them degus, I've hankered after some for a while but I suspect with the 3 cages of foster rats here, my other half would not be best chuffed. He's very understanding normally but this year people have taken the mick a bit with the rescues. Costs have been astronomical and I've even had people drop animals with me for homing that needed veterinary care and the usual costs then come and ask for money to buy more! Still, can only do me best, can't I! If you need to free up space I'd be happy to foster the goos over Xmas.

Take care

Kathy
