Unfortunately as with all young sliders you cannot tell which sex they are. Males do not grow so big possibly only 7" whereas females can reach 12".

The biggest tank possible will be required with a view to going into an outdoor pond in the summer and a large indoor enclosure in the winter.

A large filter (£70+), UVB light £15, spotlight the bulb is only £1 and a clip on spotlight could be £2. A basking dock £20 or a piece of large corkbark £5 - £10. A MVB for heat and light will be dearer but probably more economic in the long run.

If its a hatchling you will need to heat the water so a thermometer is required. Pets at Home do a 4' Clearseal tank which is 15" wide and 12" high (their new range) for £65 (I think it was yesterday). You do not need a lid so that saves on a further £40. The tank will need a stand either custom built or else something very strong/sturdy. The tank can be bare bottomed, do not use gravel, and does not really need plants as they will eat them!

Turtles themselves are relatively cheap (or free/by donation if you are able to rehome one) its the set up that costs a lot. The lights have to be on all day and the heater and external filter 24/7.

Hope this doesn't put you off - musks do not reach such large sizes as Sliders and Cooters.

Caresheet here The Terrapin Tank • View topic - North American Sliders

Cost of the setup can be as much or as little as you care to make it really, it depends on where you buy your equipment, what you buy, and whether you buy it new or used.

I could put together something for an adult for around £150, using a new filter but sourcing a second hand tank, and buying new lighting of course, but a similar setup could cost several hundreds if you went for a new tank, especially if it's a fancy name brand one.

Then you'll have to take your chances on sex, it could be either and there's usually no way to tell for sure, just be prepared for it being female!

If you want a male you won't be able to get a hatchling. Male Sliders can still reach 7"- 8" which is big.

You could try and rehome one. Aquatic shops usually sell them (often attached to garden centres) or pet shops. That will have to be your decision as I don't know your area and cannot comment on the quality of stock or the way they are being kept. It is preferable not to buy one mail order over the internet.

Apart from getting the sex you want, you'd be doing the world a favour by rehoming an unwanted Slider!

If you want a smaller turt though why not just get a smaller species, or did you particularly want a YBS for some reason?
