I took on a pair of tortoises a couple of months ago as "rescues", from a home where they were not being cared for properly. I have done my very best for them so far, they have been taken from an unsuitable environment, wormed, beakclipped and fed a good diet of various weeds and appropriate supplementation, but i have found that i am struggling for time, space, and if i'm honest, money to keep them as i would like. I have decided they should go to someone who can give them so much more than i can.
The tortoises have no DEFRA paperwork, their origin is entirely unknown so paperwork is unlikely to be given anyway, because of this there is no charge for them. However, they are not "free to good home" they are up for rehoming to an experienced and caring person who will take them on as pets. Whoever they go to must be a regular member of RFUK and have a good reputation for being knowledgeable and caring, they will not go to anyone and it is not "first come first serve" so please do not be offended if i turn you down. When they go to their new home i will ask for your name and address to pass on to DEFRA to ensure that paperwork is not sought after falsely and to therefore ensure that they will not be used for profitable purposes. Their full story including photographs is here : Tortoise ID please? They have not been wound down for hibernation as i intended to keep them awake due to their previous care and to ensure they were in the best of health. This is a hard decision, but one i feel is for the best.

Hermans and spurs are very similar you can only tell by looking from the side at their back when they are young and when they are older you can tell straight away. I looked at the pictures and the first 2 give it away but not 100%. I would say 90% they are spurs. Sorry to upset red foot marg I will stick to spurs. I owe the pet shop with reptiles and trust me when they are young you cannot tell if they are Hermans or spurs. I think the vet should be able to tell.
Good luck with you finding them a good home. It,s very nice that you gave them a home in the first place. I would have offered myself as a rehome person but I have and breed Hermans myself and my garden is too small to accommodate 2 species if they turn up to be spurs. Good luck with finding them home!!! |
