thanks guys. i have been monitoring the temps outside and its not really cold, im just a worried newbie! patrick is being cosseted at he moment, im sure we will learn more as we get to know him better.
i will put some pics up soon of his enclosure outside. should i put any bedding inside the shelter? he likes to burrow in the soil-should i put some topsoil in? worried about fungal spores in hay/straw esp if it gets damp.

As long as the overnight temps are above 10 degrees he'll be absolutely fine

Yeah definately dont go with hay or straw - I use just top soil and mine just dig about in it and make little dips for sleeping in

Stop being such a wuss - let the poor guy outside! You're only 100 miles from me and mine have been living outside since May I've brought them in today for the first time as we have torrential rain but other than that they've been outside 24/7. Check the temps a couple of times a day and Im sure he'd be fine outside

Can I ask what you all do with the base of the enclosure?

Do i dig down in the grass to put in wire (stop things getting in/out), dont fancy this as a big big task. .

or

Do I build on top of slabbed area? If so what do I do about drainage? few inches of stones with some holes in the bottom of the wood for extreme rain to get out??

What do you do about weeds (non torty ones) coming through??

im back my holiday and got the materials ready for a perm enclosure rather than the run he has been in (its too small tbh).

Here is my outdoor Tortoise Pen, It houses 4 Hermmans, 2 adult and 2 young.

The edges of the pen are lined with railway sleepers to prevent them digging under the enclosure.
