Default Mixing Species

I took a much needed hike today and got some photos some of you might be interested in.

On this log is 2 species. I know there are at least 2 more. The ones on the log are Southern Painted turtles and Yellow Bellied Sliders. I know there are Common Snappers, Musks and Muds. I have no doubt that Boxies use the water source...

Here's the habitat for you water turtle freaks... it's a man made farm pond which is very common throughout the US. This one is in Georgia, US.

Superb pics Ed... I wonder if they cross-breed as well.

I can almost guarentee they don't. An adult Painted is about 1/3 the size of an adult YBS. I don't know when they start laying eggs but YBS get close to 12 inches SCL and the Southern Painted maxes out at about 8 or less inches.

Nice pix Ed. Looks like Hampstead Heath (in London) but they would all be RES & YBS if it was!

Here's a Q --Why do turts all raise their heads like that when basking? Is it a defensive look out while they are more vunerable?

Maximum exposure... alert... I think maximum exposure is primary... that photo is about 30 meters from any point where I'm standing. How many natural predetors can reach them... and they know it... but they are still wary.

Good pics Ed...we have a lake near us...with RES in and I can spend hours watching them....but boy do they dive down quickly if they detect any movement nearby.
The local council is draining the lake and they are "getting rid" of the turts because they dont want them there anymore...wish I could catch them and take them somewhere else.
