Default Hermanns or Horsfield

I am a complete newbie to torts and I am doing a hell of a lot of research and prep before I go out and buy my new pet.

So I need some help

Can anyone tell me which is the best for a beginner - Horsfield or Hermanns

And can anyone suggest where to buy from - I live in Wigan in the North West but I am prepared to travel

Thanks

Hi and to RFUK.

Horsfield or hermanns are both very good species for someone new to torts, as are med spur thighs and marginated. Or if you think you would prefer a non-hibernating species then redfoots are a good choice (though they do grow larger than the med species). The only thing you need to be aware of with horsfields is that they are great diggers so outdoor enclosures need to be extremely escape proof!

There is a sticky in the newbie section which has a lot of links which will answer many of your questions on housing, feeding, selecting etc:

http://www.reptileforums.co.uk/newbi...ful-links.html

Any specific questions you have on housing, feeding, outdoor enclosures or any other little thing post on thread and people will gladly share their knowledge and experience with you.

There's also a sticky at the top of this section with a list of breeders:

I have read that Horsfields are good diggers – can someone tell me if we build our outdoor enclosure over cement and then add substrate on top the tort won’t escape from that surely?

Also can someone tell me can you leave Horsfields outside during summer or should you bring them inside at night and on rainy days?

Thanks
