what type of lettuce is it?? all lettuce is very low in nutritional value, its a dieters favourite after all. there isnt much to it, its mostly water, as is cucumber. it sounds like your tortoise is a stubborn one, and is putting the thumb screws on you for his salad treats! try chopping the low nutrition food like salad and cucmber really finely and mix it with finely chopped grass and weeds. and slowly decrease the amount of salad you offer him. and dont worry, as long as he is healthy he wont starve to death. but looking at them big sad eyes he make you think he is!

I know some people will frown upon it,but you could try some t-rex tortoise food as a SUPPLEMENT whilst your tortoise is being picky over his food as it will contain plenty of vitamins and minerals.Spring greens are often taken readily by many torts also.Obviously the weeds should make the basis of the staple diet but the other foods ive suggested will help kick-start your animals appetite for a varied diet.

Have you tried buying the Florette bags of leaves? They have a good mix in them which aren't too bad nutritionally to supplement his diet with until he's eating properly, watercress is usually appreciated too. Like Ali said mix it in with weeds and keep removing it gradually. If you can find vetch somewhere you might find he likes that or if anybody you know has a honeysuckle try him on the flowers.

hi i think your tortoises is addicted to a bad diet and like people its not always easy to change it, a lot of people say starve them but without a full checkup and guarantee of good health im not so sure.i know some people have had real problems breaking the pellet habit so i wouldnt encourage you to start yours on this. im not qualified to say what the nutritional value is but i know its an expensive way of feeding them and i dont use it in any shape or form. i do advise weeds and in particular a mix of at least 50% plantain which are bulky yet fibrous, these when combined with the oppurtunity to graze and often they will consume grass while doing this, the exercise and work involved ensures healthy muscle development and trim strong beaks.i am seeing excellent growth on my meds and even my leopards since they are now maintained on a strict regime so are showing far better development than previous years.as has been suggested a salad mixed with weeds then slowly reduce the percentage of lettuce until you no longer need to include it.i would be careful feeding spring greens although they are bulky and nutriscious they are also brassicas and as such contain oxalic acid which is reputed to inhibit the animlas ability to process and use dietry calcium.
