Unhappy everybody elses tortoises shell looks smooth :(

iv been seeing some pics of other peoples tortoises and their shell looks nice and smooth... mine has a shell that looks really really dry. heres some pics. its been there since i got him

is there anyway i can fix it for him? cheers

and if yours looks dry i would give him a 10 minute bath keeps them hydrated

i give him a bath everyday but it still looks really dry :P i was thinking it might be a sign shell rot or something... :S

Your little horsfield looks lovely to me.

As long as he's getting a good diet, baths, enough heat and humidity he'll be fine. Do you have a humid hide for him? If not then adding one to your set up would be a good idea.

I don't know too much about the shell I'm afraid but just wanted to say that the pic with your tort eating the clover is great!!

humid? i always thought they didnt need humid hides.

i can make one though out of sphagenham moss (used widely in reptile keeping), got a huge amount for cheap at a garden centre yesterday

the shell is fine i will try get some pics of squirt he is my youngest horsfield his is awfull it looks like he has been draged along the road its that bad,well to me ne way,

It's widely thought that heat and humidity have as much a part to play in smooth growth as diet. My humid hide is as simple as a piece of sponge stuck to the top of the hide (with araldite) which I keep damp, I also lightly spray the substrate under the hide each evening. My torts have the choice of hides and always sleep in the humid one.
