Some of you may recall my post about Pippin - the tortoise with no nose.




Since I posted I've run a course of antibiotics through him and the sinus seems to have cleared up (I can no longer hear the gloopy noises he used to make). The weight loss has stopped and I think he may have even picked up the odd gram although I'm not sure.

The problem now is that he has become incredibly reclusive indoors. Whilst in the tortoise table he spends all his time in his hide & never comes out. Whilst outside he behaves very much like a normal tortoise - active eating etc. My thinking is maybe he does'nt like the lighting I'm using (100 watt bulb in desk lamp for the basking area with a temp of about 32C & 10% UVB strib bulb). ATM this is not a massive issue as he is outdooors most days but I'm going to overwinter him and I wants this sorted before the cold weather sets in. Any idea's?

I am sure I read somewhere, i am sure it was in a T-Rex lighting guide and if I can remember/find it i will post the link.
It said something along the lines of the light given by the 10.0 UVB bulb doesn't cover the full spectrum and some reptiles find it hurts their eyes so it is recommended to use a 2.0 uv bulb as well as the 10.0 bulb so that the visual light spectrum is more natural.

That sounds like a headache - I'm thinking about an all in one bulb.

I use an all in one bulb for my torts, 100w mvb flood

My bearded dragon has the two uv strips 10.0 and 2.0 plus a tight beam basking spot lamp

i use the powersun 160w for my torts and beardies. but at the next change over i am planning on getting 1/2 powersuns and 1/2 megaray so ican see the difference between the both. The MVB lamps are wonderful, ask anybody that has used them, after using tubes ,and they will tell you that the difference is amazing. They last much longer too, and while they are more expensive initially, the price over two years is actually cheaper than tubes.

hi i changed over in time for last years hatchlings after years with tubes ,i have notice an increase in activity on all mine in particular the leopard juveniles.all mine have powersun apart from the leo hatchlings as these were the last lamps i bought and the megaray had come available.all i can say is i will not bechanging back.in the past i have had problems even getting tubes posted to Jersey in one piece,but i got my new lamps through kimbo's and everything arrived promptly and in perfect condition i do reccommend them highly.

I changed to the megaray (100w) about a month or so ago... I've noticed a huge difference in activity and appetite especially with one of them who I used to have to wake up every morning before the swap.
