hi buying an external filter this week but i need to know the best 1 to buy also how often the filter medium needs changing and how often i need to change the water. thanks in advance

Most makes are good, I use Ehiem and Fluval. Ehiem Eco range, and their older models are very reliable and well constructed.
With Turtles, the function has to be measured in part, by sturdy construction, as lots of particular waste, boisterous knocking about of inlet pipework and fittings will test the kit thoroughly.
Filter medium of Charcoal, Zeolite, foam, and filter wool will all need regular attention. In order to maintain good water flow, these dependent on size and number of Turtles will need to be cleaned out, and pipes, inlet and to a lesser extent outlet pipes need to be kept clean - Bottle brush etc.
The Charcoal and Zeolite will need replacement, usually monthly. Again, this depends on size and number of Turtles.
For my part, water change of between 30% and 60% are done every week. Over the years, I have found that this is very satisfactory.

I always recommend (and use) the Eheim Classic range. Big, simple, well made and reliable, very effective, and extremely good value from www.zooplus.co.uk

Make sure to buy a big enough one, rated for at least twice the water volume of your tank, 3 times if you have more than a couple of turts.

I put a filter foam disc in the bottom then just fill the chamber with Alfagrog, which never needs replacing, just rinse it once in a while to stop it getting clogged.
