Yawning -

Pebbles woke up this morning and had a wander round and appeared to be yawning every now and then. No other signs of any illness.... this is a yawn isn't it and not some secret code that she's actually really ill and i need to race her to the vets or anything?

If it is a yawn, it is soo cute

lol i saw of of my YBS's do that this morning. First time i have ever seen him do it. Bump if it is anything dangerous or is it just chelonia yawn day?

My torts do this as well, dont think its anything to worry about.

We just dont imagine tortoises yawning I suppose.

Phew! I initally didn't think anything of it, then was stuck in traffic this morning and my mind started going into overdrive.....

My hermans do that, it is in fact... a yawn.

My two hermanns do this as well and being a new keeper, when I took them to the reptile vet I asked him about it. It is a yawn and perfectly normal for them to do this as it is us!!!!!!

If your tortoises is yawning thats fine, but if his mouth is gaping then thats a different thing. Keep a close eye on him for other symptoms. If none, then things are alright. If other symptoms then get him to a vet as soon as you can.

We yawn sometimes as well. It's perfectly normal.

Lol - i KNOW it's normal for us to yawn - otherwise after 27 years i have a serious issue.

I figured it was a yawn, since she had just woken up and was doing her sleepy walk about under the light. She is healthy in every other way. It was more of a double check on my part.

But thanks for clearing it up, it confirmed what i thought.

Whilst i am a relatively new keeper i would hate to think that i presummed something when it could have been serious, plus it is good for others who may have noticed and thought about it but never questioned it. Like, for example if i hadn't read up on it i would have presummed a sneezing tort or a snuffly one had a cold, and we all know how serious that can be.

Which is what this site is for.

my leopard tort yawns every morning when she gets up and basks in her light. She also gently stretches and seems to enjoy waking up gently. They are soooo cute.
