Is it possible for you to make a new post and put up some shots of the tortoise please so we can see what it is - seems a bit strange that the vets didnt know what species he was - he doesnt look like my Horsfield! Was it the vets who recommended you house him in a viv? as you will have seen from the other pictures of peoples indoor set ups the majority of us believe tortoises are better off in open top tables as opposed to vivs. With a viv the main problems are air flow and ensuring the tortoise has the correct temps.

Can I suggest that once someone with more experience has identified the species you have you look up the relevant care sheet. I'm sorry if Im apeparing rude but your housing and diet need some advice. Please do find out as much as you can and get some advice for the tortoises sake - Im sure you only want what is best for your little chappy like all of us.

yeah ok but My best friend is a vet and i'm also a vet nurse, and he said its fine to keep him in a viv as he never liked being in a open top housing thing, he always seemed to not do anything but now that i've got him at the right temp and there is enough airflow cos there are 2 air vents in it and the temp is fine, His diet is correct got it checked by a vet and he is happy with the progress he is making seen as so this tort didn't really have much of a life left after being in the vets for so long.
and just for the info u are seeming rude and its putting me off this website completely after it being recommended to me and i'm new here.
I don't see anything wrong with the way i treat my tort and yes i follow all care sheets and i've read up on it, i'm also taking a reptile course in my nursing so i can get to know more, i'll put up a new post but i'm sure and so is the vet that it might be a hermans or a horsefield.
thanks for the reply

Sorry? Was that comment aimed at me and if so could you explain why please?

I'm simply stating what I believe to be the best thing for the tortoise.

He looks like a hermanns to me- one with severe MBD at that. He needs an outdoor enlcosure- he was probably miserable in the open top as he is obviously once a garden tortoise that is used to a large area and is now confined to a small vivarium.

A lot of vets, whilst they know about the anatomy of a tortoise, as they have never kept them as pets, are sometimes not up-to-date on the best husbandry methods, meaning that they can sometimes give the wrong advice. Lettuce and cucumber is unfortunatley not the best diet for this tortoise, a great guide to feeding can be found on both tortsmad:

Tortsmad.com ~ UK tortoise guides and Caresheets
and
Tortoises

Both have brilliant pics for ID'ing weeds which are in abundance at this time of year!

Hope this helps and you don't think I'm jumping down your throat.

It may be due that you stated the old fallacy that it is hard/impossible to maintain/create airflows and temperature gradients in Vivariums. Actually, it is possible to create them in Vivariums, sometimes with much better success than in Tabletop enclosures.

The actual arguments against them are limited space, lack of depth, lack of natural sunlight and stupidly high costs compared to Tabletops.

As for the Tortoise in question, I would be seriously concerned if a vet stated that it could be a Horsfield, I mean, I would start wondering about their tortoise 'experience'.
