Default plants!!

Hi guys!

I'm a newbie! Getting my setup ready for my hatchling next november. Thanks for all these pictures of your brilliant setups which have really inspired me to creat something exciting for my tortoise as well as me! Like having a little indoor garden! Very "Feng Shui"! I have a couple of very practical questions please :

I see a lot of you have planted real plants which I'm very interested about as I hate fake plants and LOVE my gardening.
Do you leave them in their pots or do you plant them directly into the substrate? If so, how do you "manage" the watering? (without ruining your wooden table or flooding your setup and create too much humidity?) Same question about the seed trays.

How deep is your substrate on average (roughly)? Do you then just "spot clean", as I imagine you're not going to uproot your ornemental plants!?

How hard is it to keep Hebes and Heathers going in these conditions?

Thanks guys!

Hi ya and welcome to the forum first off

You may want to post this or something similiar on the main board (dont worry thats it all about a housing question - you'll get more replies down there as not everyone tends to look at the stickys.

Anyways in answer to your questions:

I left mine in the pots but unfortunatley never had any luck - mine either got scoffed the first night or shrivelled up and died!! Now I dont bother at all.

I use pond liners to line my tables which saves any water marks and rotting on the wood.

Substrate wise - my spur thighs table is about 6" deep and my Horsfields table about 10" as Horsfields like to dig fairly deep.

I spot clean every day and do a total clean out every 4-6 weeks depending on how often they've used their tables.

Do you know what species of tortoise you'll be getting - if possible its recommended to buy from a breeder as opposed to a garden centre/pet shop/online - that way you can be sure that the tortoise will be UK captive bred and not wild caught and carrying something nasty

Have a good read through the caresheets on here before you buy if possible as it'll guarantee saving you some money and will give you the correct advice as opposed to those other nasty places I mention before. I'm not on commission and dont breed myself so I arent after your money

Think that answers all your questions - shout if you want anything

Thank you!
I will do all you have said. I'm getting a T.H.Hermanni from a breeder. I'm on their waiting list.
I have already lined the table with pond liner, as I actually built a "tortoise table" last year for my group of Guinea pigs living indoors and already found this was a great solution to protect the wood and make it a lot easier to clean! The one I've built now is only fairly small but will do for a bit for the baby. Then he will probably move into the large Guinea pig one and the pigs will be treated to a new shed (hopefully) next year!
Thanks for your welcome and advice, I promise I will do my homework!

All brilliant news - well done you - sounds like you've done it all the right way so far, hats off to you

There are some real nice tort houses on here well impressed with some of them.

We just finished building the new house for our tort which is a much better improvement over his hamster cage. its 900mm x 600mm for a 3" Hermans and he gets to go in the garden most days anyway. Will get a few more objects in there, like some plants maybe build a small rocky area.
