does he normally have paper as a bedding, I'd suggest using what he noramally has or at least use some of his own as the smell will make him feel more secure, mine hated me changing the bedding and wouldn't settle in the end I went back to what they are used to and they were fine, just a thought, even though they were asleep they still knew it was different enough to wake them up.

sounds ok to me, I use a polystyrene box with them in their normal bedding then if it needs packing out more shredded paper on top, I use a fridge if your boxing in the garage etc I,d put your inner box in a box with a lid, you need to stop the light etc from getting in there a few holes in both should be fine, it needs to be rat proof if not in the fridge, a wooden or plastic box or even 2 polystyrene ones might be better than just cardboard, there have been cases of torts being eaten by a rat, or use a metal filing cabinet or similar, whatever you use don't forget your daily check, just touch a leg and he'll move it and look for signs that he's wee'd or poo'd/moved around much, once down that shouldn't happen.

Sounds daft I know but have you weighed and measured him first to check he is OK for hibernation?
