Default POSSIBLE West Midland Reptile Show

Posted in snakes and lizards and then realised forgotten in here!

So would any of you be interested in attending a new reptile show in Kidderminster, West Midlands this summer. Its in its baby stages and this is market research, if its wanted enough it may just happen.

So opinions guys/gals. What would make it good? What should definitely be there? What would make it that little bit special? Which breeders/stalls would you love too see there?

I'd go to something like that but only if the animals for sale were in suitable enclosures with water and places to hide ie proper tort tables or vivs showing suitable housing etc not those horrid ice cream tubs.

Nope, I am not in the least interested in anything that brings large groups of reptiles together and would be very concerned about the risks of cross contamination. No matter how many rules or advice, there is always a high risk AFAIAC

Given the space available Anne I would imagine this to be extremely unlikely. Each stand would have to have electricity provided too - does this usually happen at such shows?

We are investigating the possibility of supplying every table with electricity as we feel that this is vital to the well being of the animals. We are attempting to increase the welfare of the animals at this show, im not saying there wont be hatchling snakes in small tubs but large species will be in large show enclosures. We are mainly contacting small hobbyists breeders who care alot about their animals so will want the best standards possible for them.

This show is less about money and more about like minded people coming together and having fun.

The risk of cross contamination is possible, but no animals will be allowed out of their enclosures during the show to reduce this and we shall also ask all breeders to ensure the health of animals before bringing them.

If you have anymore queries about it, please enquire. I was infact going to ask your opinion of which tortoise/turtle breeders to ask to come as i am not a chelonian expert, wizzasmum.

This is the sort of thing that would bother me as far as those attmeptilng to sell are concerned. I used to have a lot to do with dog shows due tot he connections with my business at the time (no I did not breed dogs I was a canine beautician). There were stringent measures in place to prevent bitches on heat attending, matings of show dogs etc etc but they may have well not bothered as I got sick of the sight of people blatantly flouting the rules.
As far as people to ask for attencance goes, I think you are asking the wrong person Your best bet is to do as you are doing and wait for a resonse from members of groups such as this.

maybe it doesn't bother snakes to be in small tubs I'm not knowlegable on them but from what I've seen torts and some lizards do seem to get distressed if kept like that, even for short periods, and don't have somewhere to hide etc to display a few babies in either vivs or tables wouldn't take up much more space and could be used positively in showing the kind of habitat/substrate etc they should have plus good caresheets and web sites could be handed out, I don't think many would object if these sort of shows were made good use of in positive ways rather than just a means of buying cheap stock. I saw vivs in the background of some of the Hamm photos so assume that power was available for those that wanted it, as for cross contamination providing the animals aren't handled by the public it can't be much worse than petshops and these shows will go ahead despite peoples reservations, they could be a positive thing if organised properly.
