Default My New Arrival

A new tortoise arrived at my house today! A young lady, who was a vet nurse, was given my phone number by our local animal care college, as she wanted to offer her tortoise for rehoming. She had called me before Christmas, & asked if I would take him on. I agreed. Today, the lady travelled to Preston from Sheffield with the tortoise. I was working, but Clark stayed in to wait for the arrival of the new shelled lodger.

I was suprised when I got home from work! He is a large male Hermanns, SCL around 9.5 - 10 inches! The lady had named him Fred. She had been walking her dogs when one of the dogs found the tortoise. That was 17 years ago. He is a big healthy boy, though he has nothing but miniscule stumps for claws on one front leg, & just little stumps on the other front foot. He has had a nice warm bath & munched on some readi grass.

Here are a couple of pics. This is one with a loo roll tube for size comparison.

Here is a pic showing his front feet.

The lady who brought Fred to me isn't sure what happened to his front claws, as they were like that when she found him. They do not appear to hinder him at all.
