Default Hi. Noob with old tort.

Hi All..

Found this while hunting round for info on how to better look after Billy the tort.
we got him in october (hibernating) as he was SWMBO's grandparents who were ill.
anyhow Grandpa died closely followed by Grandma so we have inherited Billy. they got him when (we think) he was about 10ish (pos 15), that was when SWMBO's mum was 6... she is now 64...
Billy just used to live in the basement, coming outside everyday etc and eating whatever was about or thrown to him (prob lettuce and cucumber etc) not sure what sort of diet etc...
So anyway he's still going strong, so when he woke (end march) we bathed him (prob his 1st ever) checked him over etc, kept him inside for a couple of weeks as it was still chilly tho all he wanted todo was go out and head for the light and fresh air so i quickly built up a shelter for him and thats how he's been.
So while searching i found this forum and started reading about enclosures, lighting, uv etc and with the weather still not being brilliant thought i should maybe make a better shelter prob with a coldframe pos with a light in.
Now he won't have had a heat lamp ever, or a uv light or even a proper bed and as he's so old it might turn him soft if he suddenly gets all these luxury's but i'm a pet lover so wanna look after him proper ish...
My idea was to build a coldframe with his bed/shelter at one end and a lamp (r63 or r80 pos 2) at other end. i have a uv from my fish tank which i aint using so could use that also if needed.
I wasn't gonna make an enclosure just have these bits at the sunny side of the garden as there is chicken wire all the way round anyway so he can't get out...
Is it a good idea the coldframe shelter type thing, i wanna make it as it aint uber warm yet and i'm worried he aint eating enough yet tho he has rambled today but not eaten much...

sorry for the long post...

oh and here are some pics of Billy.... what make is he lol...

thanks for any advice etc...

when i build the coldframe etc i will take pics etc and try todo a howto as lots of people seem to ask how stuff is done...

He's georgeous and judging by how smooth his shell is his previous owners must have done something right, I'm sure he'd appreciate somewhere warm to sit as long as he has the choice as to whether to use it or not, he's managed all these years without to much help so perhaps deserves a little extra comfort in his old age. Mine have been out since March although they do have a heated shed but they come outside in all weathers as long as they have somewhere dry to go, they are surprisingly hardy anyway like I said he's lovely.

He reminds me of my friends Grandads who just lets his tort wonder the garden all year and he hibernates in winter!

Sounds like he's being spoilt rotten

ask an yee shall recieve...

one belly...

yeah i thought he should have a few luxury's but didn't wanna make him a softy and not wanna come out cos suddenly he has a warm place to be all the time... its only been 15 degs max the last few days but he's come out and wandered about. just not eating much but thought that would be because it was cooler.
just getting used to him and his ways i think, was reading how they like to come out and bask for abit then go for breakfast before having lunchtime snooze etc. 3 days ago he woke walked to the weeds and just tucked in, had a snooze then it went abit colder so went back to his snug, it must have been 2pm lol...
will work it out i'm sure. seems to be lots of good advice on here...
how did we manage before t'internet...

He is absolutely lovely..what a smooth shell!! Somewhere along the line someone has done right by this tort with a shell that good...I have a 92 year old tort who was treated in the old way i.e bad diet etc and she looks just as good! Enjoy him anyway..you have made an excellent start.

What a lovely tort At a guess I'd say he was a graeca, but I'd have to see plastron shots to properly I.D him.

It looks like your garden has plenty of tort-friendly foods and that you have the right Idea Generally, these torts do better being left to their own devices, but a coldframe or kennel with a heat lamp in would be a welcome addition to his routine They need to be able to get the proper basking temperatures to digest their food. He won't need a UVB lamp if he is outside grazing.
