Default Tortoises had a little red/pink blob on them, what was it and why was it on them ?

Hello,

I want to a garden centre today that sells reptiles.
I was looking at some baby/juvenile Hermann's and some of them had small reddish pinkish blobs on their shells.

What was the blobs ?
and
Why was they on them ?

Thanks.

It's a method used by breeders to identify the hatchlings... first, second, third etc hatched... each will have a blob (usually nail varnish) on a different scute depending on which method they choose to use.

Not entirely sure, but I think it is so they can tell which 'batch' of eggs the hatchlings came from, or to distinguish them from eachother, as obviously it is hard to make out which is which when there are many. Not sure though
