Hi Lauren to the forum.

Why do you think they're good pets? That would be a good place to start.

Turtles, in the most part, require quite an expensive set up - and a lot of care.
I'm sure from reading this forum you will see that there are an awful lot looking for homes as many people take them on and then find they can't provide them with what they need.
As you are still living at home with your parents and I, therefore, assume you are young a turtle may not be the best pet for you.
These animals live for up to 40 years so you need to think about how you will provide their care in years to come. If you go off to college/uni will your parents be willing to care for it? If you move out are you still going to have the space, and time they require?
Turtles do not tolerate much handling, they are very much display animals, and while we have hours of fun watching ours I don't think you could class them as a run-of-the-mill pet. You will have to dedicate a good bit of time and money to them and if you do decide to take on the responsibility of one of these little guys please consider rehoming one in your area. So many are desperate for good homes.
Here are a few sites that will provide you with good information...

Maybe you should listen to your parents, they just might be right.

Print out a good caresheet for the species that you want to keep and get your parents to read it, if they still won't let you get one then they probably have a very good reason for refusing.
