Default Tortoises need Rehoming

Hi all,
I wonder if any of you can advise, we have 2 tortoises in our family aged 36 and 37 they are 2 differnt species although i am not sure which as can not find the paperwork from the sale all those years ago.

Rhubarb -the one that our family were sold as male is small 7 inches in length apx and greenish in colour (similar looking to the blue peter tortoise!)

and Custard - the other we believe a female is a lot larger 10 inches apx and has yellow markings.

I can try and get photos on if needed but the main advice i want is to do with rehoming these much loved pets due to difficult circumstances or even better if anyone could offer a better solution.

they have lived till now in the large garden at the home i grew up in, in a large enclosure with a shelter, and hibernate from october to spring in boxes in the garage. My parents are now elderly and struggle to get up to the garden to feed and water them, they are concerned they are not caring for them properly and have asked me to take them or find an alternative. I suppose i always knew i would inherit them one day as they live so long but never really planned my life around it and have not really got the right envoirinment for them, my back garden is not very private tiny and also paved, plus we live behind a play area with footballs coming over the fence regularly.

I really would like to keep them if possible but can't see how i can, if i have to look into rehoming them i would not want to split them up after 30+ years together and would be keen to place with experienced tortoise owners. is their anything else i need to be aware of as these tortoises pre date the importing rules and were imported orrigionally?

sorry this is all a bit mixed but trying to do this while at work

Bremma

Contact either the British Chelonia Group or the Tortoise Trust. They'll sort you out.

Hi Bremma
I understand your dilema, I myself inherited my mothers 111 year old tortoise last year when she passed away, my hermanns is used to living in mums (now my garden) and hibernates in the garden under our hedge, if yours did the same I would be delighted to take them and care for them, all the best!

So long as they are re-homed and not sold you will not need to apply for papers. If they are definatley different species you might find it a bit difficult to find someone who will house them with their own groups as they shouldn't, strictly speaking, be mixed.

They would need a seperate enclosure or after quarintine you could put them with tortoises of their own species. I can totally understand if you don't want to do this, but thought it might be a viable option for you?

I again would suggest that you rehome through either the TT or the TPG as I'm sure you'd be able to keep in touch as to how they are and know that they will never be sold on as both societys I beleive will have ownership of the torts and the homes will have been vetted or at least the owners, your torts can be valueable to the wrong person and you have no way of knowing whether, if you rehome them yourself, they will stay there and not be sold on.
