Default Tortoises and rain.

How do your torts react to the rain? And if its heavy rain do you bring them in?

Now my enclosure is complete its time for my 2 Hermanns to make the move to outside. However like alot of people at first i'm being a little girl and worrying about every scenario.

The last few days haven't been the best of weather, its been on and off rain throughout the day.

I know that in the wild they live outside for years and take everything mother nature throughs at them, but for some reason i'm still feeling nervous about putting them out 24/7.

Any words of wisdom? or what others do?

Cheers
Paul

Well it certainly does not affect the behaviour of my torts. This was taken in a massive downpour with cold winds.

Mine love a bit of rain! It's great for them and will get them hydrated too. If they have a shelter to retreat to they will pick and choose what they want.

Provided its warmish, then tortoises love a downpour of rain. They love to drink from puddles.

don't worry they're not stupid and once they've learnt where their warm house is will use it if they get to cold or wet but once warmed up you'll find they'll be back out again. You might have to put them back in a few times at first but certainly when they get older they get the hang of it, so if your around and it does rain just keep an eye on them if they get to cold and just sit there put them inside, babies often get cold then don't move, it won't do them any harm but I always used to put mine in thier house if they got to cold.

It does not even need to be warm - this pic was taken on quite a cold day TBH

Sue I'm disgusted with your torts - do they not have any manners!!!

Have to admit I was a bit of a wuss with mine to start with and used to rush out when it rained and bring them inside now both me and the tortoises have got the hang of it - I leave them alone and they do what they want

Nope - no manners whatsover, they did not even wait to get to their garden area. That is Wizza and Buttercup but Samson is no better either, he does have a preference for Herbie though.

I went to find mine last night as the weather was so foul. Two were missing so they stayed out - they got the first sun this morning though that the others missed out on, as you say, they do know best.
