Default Heat - Where am i going wrong

Since owning my hermanns 9 months ago,my gas bills have trebled.Am i using the wrong heat watt light?Is it on too long?Do i need a stat to control temps?What does everybody else do as i can't believe how much extra i'm paying in heating costs.

not sure what you are using but i have a tort table split in two as my male is pestering the female.i am using two 40 watt bulbs for their basking area plus two 5.0 uvb bulbs that are on 12 hour on 12 hour off cycle

also can they have access to outdoors in the summer that will save loads

I'm using a combined 125 watt bulb.Is this too high and thats my problem?

could be, what does the basking temp get to and how close to the tortoise personally i would say its to high but i'm sure one of the more senior members will correct me if i'm wrong

You said your gas/heating bills have trebled...how does this relate to the electricity for the bulb??

Its a combined heat/light bulb i'm using.Sorry i mean electric.

yes but electric bulbs don't use any gas. I'm confused aswell

As i said,its my electric bills that have trebled.I use the same provider for gas and electric.

What would be the correct wattage of a combined heat/light bulb please.

Should be written on it, most are about 120 watts.
